Dr. John Bleacher and Cheryle Ward of Georgia Trauma Foundation

The Weekly Check-Up is honored to have Dr. John Bleacher, President, and Cheryle Ward, Executive Director, of the Georgia Trauma Foundation with us on January 26 to discuss their vital work in strengthening the state’s trauma network.

John C. Bleacher, MD, President

Dr. John C. Bleacher’s career is a testament to his dedication to the field of medicine, particularly in pediatric surgery. His academic journey began at Wright State University, where he earned his medical degree, followed by a rigorous training in general surgery at the Pennsylvania State University Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. His research in fetal wound healing has likely contributed valuable insights into this specialized area of medicine. Further honing his expertise, Dr. Bleacher pursued pediatric surgery at Children’s National Medical Center, a confirmation of his commitment to caring for the younger population. His move to Atlanta marked the beginning of a long-standing relationship with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where he not only practiced but also took on the significant role of Trauma Medical Director. His more than two decades of service in this capacity reflects a profound impact on the institution and the well-being of countless children. Dr. Bleacher’s retirement in April 2022 marks the end of a distinguished career, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and compassionate care in the medical community of Atlanta.

Dr. Bleacher is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, the American Pediatric Surgical Association, and the Pediatric Trauma Society. He is fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Bleacher is a commission member of the Georgia Trauma Care Network Commission.

Cheryle Ward, Executive Director

In her role as Director of Philanthropy, Cheryle is responsible for leading the Foundation’s advancement efforts so more people across the state of Georgia can benefit from work that truly saves lives.

As a seasoned professional with more than 10 years in nonprofit administration, Cheryle has a history of building relationships that connect people and passion. Before working with the Foundation, she served in senior leadership roles across various industries.

Cheryle holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration specializing in Non-Profit Management and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications.
