Dr. Prabhakar Mithal and Dr. Michael Kemper of Georgia Urology

Dr. Prabhakar Mithal and Dr. Michael Kemper of Georgia Urology join us on December 5 to discuss urologic health with a focus on kidney stones.

Prabhakar Mithal, MD

Prabhakar Mithal, MD is excited to bring his expertise in kidney stones to Georgia Urology, providing his patients comprehensive surgical, medical, and preventive care for kidney stones with the goals of rendering patients 100% stone-free and decreasing the impact of stone disease on the lives of his patients as much as possible. He incorporates a number of techniques to achieve these goals, including percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), minimally invasive PCNL (MIP or Mini PCNL), renal access on the day of surgery (fluoroscopic-guided, ultrasound-guided, and endoscopic-guided), flexible and rigid ureteroscopy, metabolic evaluation and medical management for stone prevention, as well as endoscopic management of upper tract stricture disease.

Over the course of his Urology training, Dr. Mithal developed a love for managing kidney stones, leading him to pursue a 1-year Fellowship in Complex Kidney Stone Surgery at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC under the mentorship of world-renowned stone expert, Dr. Jorge Gutierrez-Aceves. As a fellow, Dr. Mithal mastered cutting edge techniques for managing large stones, including minimally invasive PCNL (MIP or Mini PCNL) with ultrasound-guided access, which can make treatments for patients with large kidney stones safer, more efficient and more likely to be able go home on the same day as their surgery.

As a natural hands-on problem solver, Dr. Mithal finds working with all Urology patients truly rewarding and treats all general urology conditions using an evidenced-based medicine approach to deliver the best possible care for his patients. He believes strongly in empowering his patients to make decisions that are in their best interest through good communication and patient education.

Dr. Mithal is originally from Boston, Massachusetts where he also completed his Bachelors degree in Brain and Cognitive Science (Neuroscience) at MIT. After researching diseases of the brain for several years at Harvard University, he joined UMass Medical School, where he found his calling in Urology and devoted 1 year to prostate cancer research at Duke University. He then went on to complete a 6-year Urology residency at University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, NY.

During residency, he gained extensive clinical experience in all aspects of general urology, including a high volume of robotic surgery. Dr. Mithal was awarded several scholarships as a resident including the Society for Urodynamics and Female Urology (SUFU) Resident Preceptorship, Society for Urologic Prosthetic Surgeons (SUPS) Surgical Lab and the International Volunteers in Urology (IVUMed) traveling scholarship through which he travelled with a team of urologists to help conduct surgical seminars in Senegal. It was through a combination of clinical work, volunteer work and research on surgical simulation that he developed his interest in treating kidney stones. Dr. Mithal also presented his research work at international conferences multiple times and had his work published in multiple peer-reviewed journals.

In his spare time, Dr. Mithal loves to spend time with his wife, family, and friends, travel, exercise, do yoga, hike, cook, and draw.

Michael Kemper, MD

Dr. Michael Kemper graduated with a Bachelor of Science in molecular biology from the University of Michigan. His lifelong desire to follow in the footsteps of his physician parents found him receiving his doctor of medicine from Albany Medical College. Dr. Kemper completed his urology residency at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University, and his fellowship in sexual medicine and men’s health at Nova Southeastern University.

He is a member of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America, the American Urology Association, and the Society of Urologic Prosthetic Surgeons. Dr. Kemper is an experienced researcher, has co-authored various publications, and has made numerous presentations at professional conferences throughout the country.

Dr. Kemper specializes in lifestyle urology, including erectile dysfunction, incontinence, and enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia). He focuses strongly on penile prosthetics and erectile dysfunction restoration surgery. “I enjoy the surgeries,” he says, “and the patient population is great to work with. At the end of the day, you’re providing a service that makes people’s lives better. I’m so fortunate to be able to do something I love every day.”

In 2021, Dr. Kemper received the Center of Excellence designation for GreenLight Laser Therapy, a recognition awarded to physicians who have demonstrated a high degree of experience with the procedure and commitment to delivering effective, long-lasting therapy to patients suffering from BPH.

In his spare time, Dr. Kemper enjoys reading, watching professional and college basketball and football, cooking, and going for walks with his dog, Bear.
