Drs. Rebecca Seidel and Karen Godette of Emory Healthcare

On October 25, for Breast Cancer Awareness month, we are joined by Dr. Rebecca Seidel and Dr. Karen Godette of Emory Healthcare to discuss breast cancer prevention, screening, and early state therapy. We will also discuss radiation including protons in more advanced disease.

Rebecca Seidel, MD

Rebecca Seidel, MD is a board-certified diagnostic radiologist and Associate Professor of Diagnostic Radiology and Imaging Sciences at Emory University School of Medicine. She received her medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA and completed both her diagnostic radiology residency and fellowship in breast imaging at Emory.

Dr. Seidel specializes in breast imaging and interventions. She has expertise in mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI and image-guided biopsies of the breast. She is passionate about early detection of breast cancer, and she advocates for breast cancer patients through her service on the board of Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta. Dr. Seidel also serves on a number of national committees of the American College of Radiology and American Association of Women in Radiology, focusing on physician well-being and women in radiology. She lives in Atlanta with her husband and three children. In her spare time, she enjoys exercise and outdoor adventure.

Karen Godette, MD

Karen Godette, MD received her MS and MD degrees from Howard University in Washington, DC, where she also completed a year-long transitional internship. She completed her residency in radiation oncology at Columbia University New York-Presbyterian Hospital, where she served as chief resident.

Dr. Godette has served as medical director of the radiation oncology department at Emory University Hospital Midtown since 2001. She is board-certified in radiation oncology and a clinical member of Winship Cancer Institute and Emory Proton Therapy Center. She specializes in brachytherapy, intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) and proton therapy. Her practice sees patients with breast malignancies, prostate cancer and soft tissue sarcoma.

She is a member of the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, Connective Tissue Oncology Society, American Medical Women’s Association, American Board of Radiology and National Medical Association, where she served as chair of the radiology section from 2005-2007. Dr. Godette remains actively involved in the community and participates in health fairs, educational workshops, multidisciplinary panels and support groups throughout Atlanta.
