Our experts this week, Dr. Wollenzien, of YourTown Health and Dr. Howard of Emory’s Rollins School of Public Health will be joining the show for a discussion on what you can expect from your future health care providers.

Dr. Jon Wollenzien, Jr., CEO of YourTown Health

Jon W. Wollenzien, Jr., has been the Chief Executive Officer of YourTown Health, formerly known as Palmetto Health Council, Inc., since February 1993. Prior to joining PHC, Dr. Wollenzien was the Vice President of South Fulton Medical Center in Atlanta, Georgia. SFMC was a 427-bed acute care, private non-profit Hospital.

Dr. Wollenzien also resided as an Associate Administrator with Charter Medical Corporation, a network of for-profit hospitals providing inpatient acute care and mental health services. Dr. Wollenzien’s first job was with Valley Health Systems, Inc., a network of Federally Qualifies Health Center’s in West Virginia.

He received his undergraduate degree from Marshall University, Huntington, WV, in business management. While working in Des Moines, Iowa, he completed his Masters in Health Care Administration from the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences. Dr. Wollenzien received his terminal degree, Doctorate of Business Administration, at Nova Southeastern University, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

In 2005, Dr. Wollenzien was selected by HRSA and UCLA to participate in the Johnson & Johnson/UCLA Health Care Executive Program. Dr. Wollenzien is an Assistant Adjunct Professor at Emory’s Rollins School of Public Health teaching Operations Management to health policy and management graduate students.

Dr. David Howard is an associate professor of health policy and management at Emory’s Rollins School of Public Health. Dr. Howard was also an advisor to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, MEDPAC, the American Cancer Society, the Division of Transplantation in the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Institute of Medicine.

Dr. Howard received his degree in health policy from Harvard University and has a special interest in the value of early detection in improving cancer survival rates and the impact of quality on a patient’s choice of health care provider.

He says there are benefits to the new health care legislation, such as increasing the continuity of insurance coverage and funding for comparative effectiveness research, but he is concerned about the fiscal impact of the legislation and its lack of long-term cost controls for Medicare.
