Dr. John McKnight does not limit his thinking or approaches to the care of a cancer patient by age or circumstance. With 25 years of oncology care experience, he understands the difference between aggressive care of advanced cancer versus care that is aggressive in the pursuit of alleviating pain and suffering.

“In my mind, the medical oncologist is there to guide the cancer patient’s care,” says Dr. McKnight, a medical oncologist at Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Southeastern Regional Medical Center. “It is the place where patients receive a more complete understanding of their illness, as well as direction for fighting the disease.”

Dr. McKnight has many years of experience in treating a broad range of cancers. He has established a reputation in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer and lung cancer. In addition to clinical practice, Dr. McKnight is dedicated to staying well informed about the ever-changing healthcare environment.

He is a graduate of Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C. He completed an internal medicine residency at UPMC Presbyterian, which is affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. McKnight completed his medical oncology fellowship at the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health. Additionally, he holds an MBA with a focus in medical management from Johns Hopkins University.

Prior to joining CTCA, Dr. McKnight owned a private practice in Washington, D.C., for 23 years. He was also the Vice Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., and a senior staff oncologist at the Washington Cancer Institute at Washington Hospital Center.

Dr. McKnight has received Washington Hospital Center’s highest honor for excellence in teaching, the Joe H. Gaskin MD Award, eight times in his career. Both Washingtonian Magazine (1999, 2002, 2005, 2008, 2010 and 2012) and Washington Consumers’ Checkbook consistently voted him as one of the top doctors in Washington, D.C. Dr. McKnight also was the 2002 recipient of the Insignis Medal, which is awarded to one who is outstanding or exceptional in service to other people and to the community.
